Abstract
Precipitation hardening of a dental Ag-Pd-Cu alloy containing gold, indium and zinc was elucidated by investigating the changes in hardness, phase transformation, microstructural changes and elemental distribution during aging process. The obtained results were as follows. 1. The solution-treated specimen was composed of the Ag-rich matrix, the CuPd particle-like structure of large and small sizes and the lamellar structure of alternate layers with the Ag-rich and CuPd phases. 2. The decomposition of the Ag-rich matrix into the Cu-rich phase and the product Ag-rich ¡¯ phase caused an apparent hardness increase. 3. The appearance of the grain boundary entanglement structure composed of the Cu-rich phase restrained further increase in hardness before the complete decomposition of the parent Ag-rich phase. 4. The formation of the fine entanglement structures at the grain boundary, expansion toward the grain interior and coarsening reduced the inter-phase boundaries between the precipitates and the solute-depleted matrix, resulting in softening. 5. The CuPd particle-like structure of various sizes did not contribute to the changes in hardness.
